California Apostille Services
For documents intended for international use
If your document will be presented outside the United States, proper preparation matters just as much as the apostille itself. Some California documents are submitted as certified records, others must be notarized first, and some require a different authentication path entirely depending on the receiving country. Knowing which route applies is what prevents delays, rejections, and unnecessary backtracking.

What Is an Apostille?
APOSTILLE [uh-pos-til]
Apostille Law & Legal Definition
Apostille refers to a means of authenticating a signature on a document that is recognized by an international body. The country of destination determines whether the authentication is an apostille or certification. It is the legalization of a document for International use under the terms of the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents.
Under the Hague Convention, signatory countries have agreed to recognize public documents issued by other signatory countries if those public documents are authenticated by the attachment of an internationally recognized form of authentication known as an "apostille." The apostille ensures that public documents issued in one signatory country will be recognized as valid in another signatory country.
If you would like additional information about the Apostille process you may download the "The ABC's of Apostilles" published by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. http://www.hcch.net
An apostille is an official government certificate that authenticates the signature, seal, or stamp on a document so it can be legally recognized in another country. It is used for international document validation under the 1961 Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents.
In practical terms, an apostille confirms that the public official who signed or issued the document had the authority to do so. It does not validate the contents of the document itself. Instead, it verifies that the signature or seal on the document is genuine and recognized for international use.
Under the Hague Convention, member countries agree to accept public documents issued by other member countries when those documents have been properly authenticated with an apostille. This allows documents issued in California or elsewhere in the United States to be recognized abroad without going through the more traditional legalization process.
Common documents that may require an apostille include birth certificates, marriage certificates, powers of attorney, diplomas, transcripts, affidavits, and corporate filings. If the destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, the apostille is the form of authentication required before the document will be accepted there.
If the destination country is not part of the Hague Convention, the document cannot be apostilled alone and must usually go through authentication and embassy or consulate legalization instead.
Simply put: an apostille makes a U.S. document valid for use in another country.

California Apostille Service by Mail
For clients who are unable to meet in person or prefer to handle everything remotely, we offer California apostille service by mail. This option is ideal for clients located outside Los Angeles, outside California, or anywhere outside the United States who need a California document processed for international use.
Mail-in service begins with document review. Before anything is sent, the document should be checked to confirm that it is eligible for apostille and in the proper form for submission. Depending on the document type, that may mean a certified copy issued by the appropriate agency or a document that has been correctly notarized.
Once the document is ready, clients may mail it in for processing. After completion, the apostilled document can be returned by standard mail, expedited shipping, or another delivery method requested in advance.
Mail-in apostille service is often the best option for clients who already have their documents prepared and need a secure, straightforward way to move the process forward without an in-person appointment.
This option is commonly used by:
out-of-area clients
clients with California-issued records already in hand
clients relocating or living abroad
attorneys, businesses, and families coordinating documents remotely
Before mailing your documents
Please make sure the document has been reviewed for apostille eligibility before sending it in. Not every document is ready for submission as presented, and mailing the wrong version can create unnecessary delays.
